It’s true! They do pay people to write!

freelance writing jobsIn the past few weeks I have “marked as read” nearly 5,000 blog posts without actually having read them. There could be a couple of things going on here. First, it’s quite possible that I just suck. But it’s more likely the freelance part of my career picked up again at precisely the same time my high speed internet connection decided to tank for a couple of hours each evening. (Why yes I have submitted articles from a very dark, very closed Panera Bakery parking lot in the past week. Buy a bagel. Support my free WiFi backup plan.)

It all started when I responded to an ad on Craigslist for a freelance writer. I know some people think Craigslist is a sketchy place to find work, and that’s okay with me. It’s not like I need the extra competition. But I’ve landed some really kick-ass jobs through the site — including the work I did a couple of years ago as an assistant to John Green. Then I found oDesk, and…well… I might have my VISA card (the one full of charges from divorcing Liar, Liar Pants on Fire™) paid off in three years instead of twenty.

Go me! Go me!

The downside? Posts here are going to be sporadic. If you want more, you might have to try sneaking a request by me and making it look like a freelance assignment. Or…I know! Dan was supposed to do a guest post here like months ago. Try browbeating him.

I am so envious. I am working on my portfolio, which is why I have been a little sporadic in my blogging and I am going to start on a resume in the next week. Any pointers for a non-experienced writer resume would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome about all your paid gigs!!!!!!

Best of luck to you, hope you get that #$%R)(&)# debt paid off soon.

Craigslist is probably an ok vehicle for advancing your career… just don't agree to go with anyone to a second location.

  • redsneakz

I'll try to write my posts quickly so that you don't have to take a lot of time to read them.

  • Gina

It's good to know that good things come of those ads. I have checked them out a few times, but then decided against it. I think I'll go back and try again.

By the way, I love your style.

I landed my job off Craiglists, but not before a couple of weirdo responses.
Congrats on the job.. I am jealous.

  • Paul

Congratulations on your freelancing job. I can see why they hired you. I will miss your less frequent postings.
