Going nowehere at about 4.5 miles per hour

While I’m waiting for Donatos to bring me my carbs and cheese, I thought I’d take a moment to write about this running thing I’m doing again.

More than a year ago I started the Couch to 5k training program. Not only did I finish the program at the end of 2009, but I ran a complete 5k without stopping or walking. It wasn’t a pretty or glamorous race for me, but I did it.

Then I stopped running. Not abruptly or anything. I just sort of fizzled out.

The good news is that going back to running is kind of like riding a bike. My muscles actually remember what they’re supposed to do. In the interest of injury prevention, I thought it would be a good idea to go through the C25K program again from the beginning, but as it turns out I quickly became bored because it was too easy. I ended up skipping the parts between Week 2, Day 1 and Week 5, Day 2.

Other things are coming back to me too. Including my voracious appetite. I keep saying, “Yo, stomach! I fed you like five minutes ago! It would be nice if you recognized that fact.”

So far, the treadmill was a good Christmas present to myself. I’ve burned 1300 calories and logged about 12 miles in the couple of weeks I’ve owned it.

I have a personal goal of climbing up the CN tower. As of date, I can climb up 180 steps in my apartment building (that’s 9 storeys) – I dread the thought of doing that 9 more times !

I do the stairs as a warm-up and dash out to enjoy the brisk walk in the cold.

Good luck with your goals !

That’s an awesome goal! I’ve thought about doing one of the stair climb races here in Indianapolis. It’d be tough though!

Who are all those people? Random social networking people from a running network? Coincidentally, I was just looking at the NYC Marathon entry form. Might as well, 11 dollars to randomly not get picked. If I do? I’d probably train my ass off to do it.

Those are the people who finished before and after me in the race. Duh!

Well you didn’t say the list was from the race or anything, just put it in there! :P

  • Bobbi Janay

    That is pretty dang awesome.

Good job, Emily! I agree with your comment that muscles remember how to run. I’ve been sucked into the Zumba craze (story for another time), yet last night I hopped onto my treadmill and kicked out 2 miles … the first time in months. I was actually astonished at the relatively easiness of jogging that length after being away so long (and I am NOT a runner – yet)! :) I’ve always wanted to complete a 5K … maybe 2011 is my chance. Thanks for sharing your victory and good luck with tackling your next goal.
