12 Ways to Give: Heifer International

gift

In light of the season, I’d like to take some time to highlight ways we can all give. Today’s featured organization is Heifer International.

Now, I don’t expect all of you to rush out and donate to the charities I’ll be highlighting over the next 12 days. I don’t expect you to give to any of them necessarily, though I think it would be awesome if you did. My real purpose is to get us all thinking—even if for only a few minutes—about ways we can make the world a better place by giving.

About Heifer International

According to their website, Heifer International works to end hunger and poverty with gifts of livestock and training. Families get better nutrition through their “living loans.” Then when their animal has offspring, those families commit to donating that animal to another needy family.

Awesome?

Totally.

How to Help

Give a pig, llama, heifer, rabbits, and more. Or if you can’t afford the whole water buffalo, you can donate a share. See the whole Heifer International Gift Catalog.

Donate through HI’s Website

I love Heifer International (and love that Alton Brown supports them, too). This year my husband and I are getting a sponsorship for a family farm (plants, bees, rabbits, etc) in memory of my Grandmother as a gift for my Mother.

That’s an awesome gift. And I didn’t know that about Alton Brown, but now I like him even more.

Of course now that I’ve written that, I do see his video link on their website. :)

Please do not support Heifer International or any other group that ships animals overseas. The populations do not have the resources to feed and give veterinary care to these animals and often live on marginal land that is depleted more with animal agriculture than with eating the produce directly. Animal agriculture takes large amounts of land to feed people. The people, the land and the animals all suffer. Thank you for choosing compassion.

Hi Rae, sorry your comment got lost in moderation limbo. Akismet had it marked as spam — sometimes it goofs up. You raise a point that is certainly worthy of exploring. If you’d care to do a guest post on Suess’s Pieces on this topic, I’m definitely open to letting readers hear you out (as well as give Heifer a chance to respond.)
